“Strive to exceed expectations.”
Steve joined Barfield, Murphy, Shank & Smith in 1994. He is the senior member of the Tax Practice Group, managing the tax quality control process for the firm. As a member, Steve predominantly focuses on technical tax needs in the areas of S corporations and partnership taxation with an emphasis on transactional work encompassing the life cycle of a business: formation, ongoing operations, mergers and acquisitions, dispositions and liquidations, and the impact on the owners of the business. With more than 30 years of experience in his field, Steve works with all industries represented by Barfield, Murphy, Shank & Smith with an emphasis in real estate, professional service firms, manufacturing, and wholesale businesses.
Over the years, Steve has assisted countless clients with their accounting, tax and consulting needs. Steve has assisted clients with IRS controversy work, including examinations and administrative appeals, and collection matters. For example, he recently guided a high net worth individual client through an IRS exam of his personal return, which included numerous business and rental activities. The examination resulted in a no-change report being issued by the IRS in spite of several significant issues originally raised by the examining agent, before being ultimately resolved in favor of the taxpayer. Prior results, of course, do not guarantee future success, but Steve has the experience to deal with such matters. Steve also has experience advising his clients on the tax consequences of business liquidation events, given the alternative structures that may be available.
Steve is often described as friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and always available. He attributes his success to his caring nature and willingness to put in the hard work. Always having an interest in business and taxes, Steve felt a tax practice in public accounting would be the best utilization of accounting and law degrees.
Raised in Montgomery, Alabama, Steve now lives in Mountain Brook with his wife, Robin. They have three daughters, two granddaughters, one dog, and three granddogs. When Steve is not at the office, he also enjoys reading, exercising, fishing, kayaking, shooting sports, and small woodworking projects to express his creative skills in a tangible way.
