Personal Service Philosophy
“Strive to exceed expectations and learn from the times you fall short”
Zak joined Barfield, Murphy, Shank & Smith in 2016 as an intern and became a full-time staff accountant in 2017. His responsibilities include providing tax preparation and assurance services for a variety of clients in a variety of industries.
While as an intern in the BMSS Auburn office, Zak provided invaluable assistance for a healthcare client by creating a custom excel spreadsheet to calculate highly complex and variable paycheck amounts which the client’s bookkeeper previously had to enter manually. By creating this customized solution, Zak helped save the client approximately 20-30 hours of work per month.
Known as being light-hearted and enthusiastic, Zak was inspired to go into accounting by a former professor who was energetic and made him want to learn more about the profession. His favorite quote is by George Jenkins, the founder of Publix, “Publix will be a little better place to work, or not quite as good, because of you.” To him, this speaks to the role that each individual plays in an organization. While it may be difficult for one person to enact immediate and fundamental change within an organization, the daily actions of individuals can certainly impact a client’s satisfaction, and the overall operating efficiency of an organization.
Zak grew up in the Birmingham area and now lives with his spouse Adria and their dog Chester in Crestwood. Zak and Adria love being close to the many food and entertainment options that downtown Birmingham offers.
